The original EMB-145 design was launched in 1989 and would have been a variant stretched jet engined EMB-120 Brasilia. But in 1990 Embraer drop the original design due to wind tunnel testing and which found that the original design would not reach it's performance objectives. The renamed ERJ-145 took its first flight on August 11, 1995. The first commercial airlines to purchase the EMB-145 was Continental Express in December 1996. Continental's order for 25 EMB-145s was a major boost for the EMB-145 program and opened the doors for a number of major sales. Embraer has developed several variants of the ERJ-145, the first was the ERJ-145ER, the higher max takeoff weight longer range ERJ-145LR was introduced in 1998. The most recent is the ERJ-145XR (Extra Long Range). The 145XR flew for the first time on June 29, 2001 and entered service in October 2002. Some of its features include a more fuel efficient engines, winglets, 53,131lb max takeoff weight, a max cruising speed of Mach 0.8, and an increased fuel capacity range. Although early development was ruff starting, the 50 seat ERJ-145 has become a runaway sales success.
