Douglas DC-8
For a larger view, click on thumbnail.
Douglas announced that it was developing a jet powered airliner under the name DC-8. The first DC-8 did not take to the skies until May 30 1958, shortly before the 707 entered service with PanAm. Certification for the DC-8 was awarded on August 31 1959. Delta and United were the first to put the DC-8 into commercial service in September of that year.
