The Convair 240, 340 and 440 was one of the closest designs to being a Douglas DC-3 replacement. Despite cheap DC-3s during the postwar years this family of Convair airliners achieved considerable sales success. Design of the Convair 110 was built in response to an American Airlines request for a DC-3 replacement. American Airlines found the Convair 110 to be too small and asked that the Convair 110 be scaled up in size, and this resulted in the 240 ConvairLiner. The Convair 240 was the most advanced short haul airliner of its time. The Convair 240 first flew on March 16 1947 and entered service on June 1 1948.

The success of the Convair 240 led to the stretched Convair 340, which first flew on October 5 1951. Shortly there after the improved Convair 440 Metropolitan which incorporated extra cabin sound-proofing, new rectangular exhaust outlets, tighter engine cowling's, and other aerodynamic improvements. The Convair 440 flew for the first time on October 6 1955. Most of the Convair 440's were delivered with weather radar in an elongated nose, which had been an option on the Convair 340. The Convair 240, 340 and 440 sold in large numbers, mainly to airlines in North America. Which formed the backbone of many airlines short to medium haul fleets. Today a small number of Convairs that remain in service are mainly used as freight haulers. Many of the Convairs were also built for the US Air Force which were named the C-131 and the T-29. The US Navy variant was the R4Y which was redesignated to a C-131 in 1962.
