Development work on the CRJ-700 started in 1995 when Bombardier began consultation with a 15 member airline advisory panel on what the airlines wanted in a 70 seat class regional jet. The prototype was named the CRJ-X which was later changed to the CRJ-700 due to the formal launch in January 1997. Construction of the first prototype CRJ-700 began in late 1998.

The CRJ-700 is a stretched 70-seat version equipped with the General Electric CF34-8C1 engine. Maximum speed is Mach .85 at a maximum altitude of 41,000 feet. Depending on payload the CRJ-700 can travel up to 2,250 miles with its current engines. A new variant with CF34-8C5 engines is able to travel up to 2,895 miles. The CRJ-700 features a new wing with leading edge slats and a stretched and slightly widened fuselage. This allows the aircraft to carry up to 78 passengers with a crew of 2 plus cabin crew. The first Flgiht for the CRJ-700 was in 1999 and entered service in 2001. The CRJ-700 comes in three subvariants - Series 700, Series 701 and Series 702. The 700 seats 68 passengers, the 701 seats 70 passengers, and the 702 seats 78 passengers.
